AI Football Predictions: NFL and Soccer Models Compared

The AI prediction sites and models for NFL and soccer, how expected goals and Elo ratings drive them, and how to judge whether a football model is any good.

AI football predictions come in two flavors, and they rarely use the same math. Soccer models such as Forebet, PredictZ and WinDrawWin lean on goal and shot data, increasingly expected goals (xG). They forecast low-scoring matches where a draw is a real possibility. NFL models such as nfelo, BetQL and Rithmm rate teams and quarterbacks to project point spreads, in one of the most efficient betting markets in sport.

Below are the sites worth using for each code, how xG-based models turn shots into probabilities, and how to test a football model before you trust it.

AI soccer prediction sites compared

Site What it gives you Coverage Cost
Forebet 1X2 probabilities, predicted score, goals, BTTS, corners, cards 800+ leagues Free
PredictZ Picks, form, stats and standings Major and minor leagues Free
WinDrawWin Correct-score forecasts and derived markets Major European leagues and more Free
Oddspedia Community and expert picks with odds comparison 30+ sports Free
BetQL Star-rated model bets EPL, LaLiga, Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS, Champions League $60 or $300 a year

Forebet

Forebet is the default stop for free soccer probabilities. It describes its engine as mathematical algorithms and statistical models run on historical match data. It covers more than 800 leagues, from the Premier League and Champions League down to regional divisions. Each fixture shows home, draw and away probabilities, a predicted score and average goals. You also get lines for over/under 2.5, both teams to score, half-time/full-time and Asian handicap.

The site explains little about its inputs and makes no accuracy claims. Its value is speed and breadth: a sanity check on the price, particularly in lower leagues.

PredictZ

PredictZ publishes free daily picks with form tables, records, stats and standings. Its predictions read more like a structured tipster than a probability engine, so use it for context rather than pricing.

WinDrawWin

WinDrawWin has published correct-score forecasts since 2003 and derives markets such as both teams to score from them. A predicted scoreline is a blunt instrument. In most matches the most likely score still lands less than one time in five, so treat it as a direction, not a bet.

Oddspedia

Oddspedia mixes expert and community picks across more than 30 sports with an odds comparison tool. The comparison is the useful part: whatever you think of a pick, getting the best available price is the one edge every bettor controls.

BetQL for soccer

BetQL extends its star-rated model to the Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, Serie A, MLS, the Champions League and the World Cup. It is the cheapest paid model here, and the only one that pairs ratings with public betting percentages.

AI NFL prediction models worth following

nfelo

nfelo takes FiveThirtyEight’s Elo rating system and adjusts it for home field, rest, weather and quarterback performance. It is built on the open nflfastR data. It publishes power ratings, game predictions and its model performance, all free. That transparency makes it the best baseline for judging any paid NFL pick service.

BetQL

BetQL’s NFL and college football models rate spreads, totals and moneylines from one to five stars and update as lines move. Its sharp report shows where professional money sits, which is useful when the model disagrees with the market.

Rithmm

Rithmm lets you weight factors such as offense, defense and situational stats, then track how your custom NFL model performs over the season. Plans start at $29.99 a month on its pricing page, with a seven-day trial.

Leans.ai

Leans.ai’s Remi model publishes NFL and college football picks with a confidence rating in units. Its self-reported record shows the NFL as profitable over its history. That record is the company’s own, not an audit.

How xG-based soccer models work

Goals are rare and noisy. A team can dominate a match and lose 1-0 to a deflection. Expected goals fixes that by scoring the quality of each chance rather than the result.

From shots to xG

An xG model compares every shot with thousands of similar historical shots. Inputs include distance and angle to goal, whether it was a header or a kick, the type of pass that created it and how the attack developed. Opta’s model, used by FBref, also weighs defensive pressure, the goalkeeper’s position and how clear the path to goal was. A penalty is worth a fixed 0.79 xG in that model.

Shots in the same move are not simply added. If a possession produces chances worth 0.41, 0.47 and 0.79 xG, the probability that at least one goes in is 1 − (0.59 × 0.53 × 0.21), or about 0.93 xG, not 1.67.

From xG to match probabilities

A betting model then estimates how many goals each team should score in the next match. It usually starts from rolling xG for and against, adjusted for opponent strength and home advantage. Those averages feed a Poisson distribution, a standard formula that turns an expected goal count into the probability of 0, 1, 2 or more goals.

A worked example: say the model expects the home side to score 1.6 goals and the away side 1.1, a combined 2.7. Under a simple Poisson model, the chance of no goals is e−2.7, about 6.7%. The chance of two or fewer goals is roughly 49.4%, so over 2.5 goals is about 50.6%, a fair decimal price of around 1.98. If a bookmaker offers 2.10, the model sees value; at 1.85 it does not. Our expected value calculator does that comparison for you.

Where the models go wrong

  • Independence. Basic Poisson treats both teams’ goals as unrelated, which understates draws. Better models add a correlation adjustment.
  • Team news. A model trained on last season’s xG does not know the striker is injured, the manager just left or the side is resting players for Europe.
  • Small samples. Six games of xG is a hint, not a rating.
  • The market knows too. Bookmakers and sharp bettors use xG. In big leagues, the edge from public xG data is mostly priced in.

How NFL prediction models work

NFL models usually start with a team rating system, most often Elo or a points-per-play efficiency metric. Each result nudges a team’s rating up or down depending on how surprising it was. The model then converts the rating gap between two teams, plus home field, into a projected spread and a win probability.

The quarterback is the biggest single adjustment. Models such as nfelo carry a separate QB rating so that an injury changes the projection immediately, rather than weeks later as results catch up.

The problem is efficiency. NFL sides and totals attract huge volume and sharp money, and closing lines are hard to beat. At standard -110 pricing you need to win 52.4% against the spread to break even. A model must beat a coin flip by a margin few public systems sustain. Use our implied probability calculator to see what any line assumes.

Using AI soccer predictions market by market

A probability is only useful if you apply it to the right bet. Each soccer market reacts differently to model output.

1X2 and draw no bet

The three-way market is where models struggle most, because draws are hard to predict and books price them carefully. Say a model rates a home side well above the market but has no strong view on the draw. Draw no bet, which refunds your stake on a draw, captures that edge with less noise.

Totals and both teams to score

Goal markets are where xG earns its keep. Totals depend on the combined goal expectation, which xG estimates more reliably than the winner. Both teams to score depends on each side’s chance of scoring at least once. Take a home expectation of 1.6 goals and an away expectation of 1.1. A basic Poisson model puts the home side scoring at about 80% and the away side at about 67%, so both scoring at roughly 53%.

Correct score

Correct-score predictions make for good headlines and poor bets. Even the most likely scoreline rarely carries more than a 12 to 15% chance, and bookmakers build big margins into these markets.

Parlays

Stacking several AI picks into an accumulator multiplies the book’s margin as well as the odds. If you combine legs, check what you are giving up with our parlay calculator.

Which football prediction tool suits you

  • Casual soccer bettor: Forebet for free probabilities, Oddspedia to find the best price.
  • Goals-market bettor: an xG-based approach, cross-checked against Forebet’s over/under and BTTS lines.
  • NFL spread bettor: nfelo as a free baseline; BetQL if you want star ratings plus sharp-money data.
  • Model builder: Rithmm, which lets you set your own weights across NFL and college football.
  • Pick follower: Leans.ai’s free daily pick, logged in your own spreadsheet before you pay for more.

Free vs paid football models

Free soccer prediction sites are funded by bookmaker advertising, so they make money when you sign up and bet, whatever happens next. Paid NFL tools make money when you keep subscribing. Neither model is sinister, but both explain why no site leads with its losing months.

Our advice is simple. Start free, log every prediction you would have bet for a few weeks, and pay only if the record holds up against the closing price. A seven-day trial rarely separates skill from luck, so use it to learn the interface, not to judge results.

College football and the model gap

College football is a different animal from the NFL. More than a hundred top-division teams, huge talent gaps and frequent roster turnover make markets thinner and lines softer, especially in smaller conferences. That suits models, which rate every team consistently. It punishes bettors who rely on name recognition. BetQL, Rithmm and Leans.ai all cover college football.

The flip side is that betting limits are lower and books move quickly when sharp money arrives. Some states also restrict college betting: Ohio, for example, banned player props on college games in 2024. Check our Ohio betting guide or your own state’s page before you bet.

Testing a football prediction model

  1. Record the price. Log each prediction with the odds available at the time and the closing odds.
  2. Score probabilities. If the model gives percentages, use a Brier score (the average squared gap between forecast and result) rather than a hit rate.
  3. Check calibration by band. Its 60% calls should win about 60% of the time.
  4. Beat the close. A model whose picks consistently move in its favor before kick-off is finding information.
  5. Size carefully. Even a good model has error, which is why most bettors stake a fraction of full Kelly. Try our Kelly criterion calculator.

FAQ

Which is the best AI football prediction site?

For soccer, Forebet offers the widest free coverage with probabilities for more than 800 leagues. For the NFL, nfelo is a free, transparent Elo-based model, while BetQL and Rithmm sell more detailed paid models. None publishes an independently audited record, so test any site against closing odds.

How accurate are AI soccer predictions?

Even good soccer models pick the correct 1X2 result only about half the time, because draws are common and goals are rare. Accuracy that matters is calibration: whether the model's 60% calls land about 60% of the time, measured against the bookmaker's price.

What is xG in football betting?

Expected goals, or xG, is the probability that a shot becomes a goal based on factors such as distance, angle and the type of chance. Betting models use a team's xG for and against as a better guide to future scoring than actual goals, which swing on luck.

Can AI predict NFL games against the spread?

Models can estimate a fair spread, but NFL lines are among the most efficient markets in sport. Beating -110 pricing requires winning more than 52.4% of bets, and few public models sustain that over several seasons.
