How free bets work
A sign-up free bet follows the same sequence at almost every UK bookmaker. Register, deposit with an eligible method, place a qualifying bet at or above the minimum odds, and wait for it to settle. The free bets then appear in your account, usually within hours, and must be used before they expire.
Stake not returned
This is the line that matters most. When a free bet wins, you receive the winnings only, not the free bet stake. A £10 free bet at 4.0 returns £30. The same £10 as a cash bet would return £40.
Every sportsbook offer in our table says this in its terms, in one form or another. At bet365 it reads “returns exclude Bet Credits stake”. At Coral, Ladbrokes, Virgin Bet and LiveScore Bet it is “stake not returned”.
Qualifying odds
Your first bet must be at or above the minimum odds, or the offer will not trigger. The range is wide. Coral, Ladbrokes and Spreadex accept 1/2, Virgin Bet and LiveScore Bet 1.5, Betfred, Betway and Unibet 2.0, and SBK 3.0.
Lower qualifying odds mean a better chance your qualifying bet wins, which cuts what the offer actually costs you to claim. A £10 bet at 1/2 on a strong favourite risks half the cash of a £20 bet at 3.0. It is also far more likely to come back as a winner. Factor that into any comparison of headline values.
Payment methods
Most offers require a debit card deposit. Betfred and Betway say so explicitly; Unibet also accepts instant bank transfer. E-wallets such as PayPal, Skrill and Neteller are often excluded. Make your first deposit with a debit card if you want the free bets.

Free bets are not always usable everywhere. Coral and Ladbrokes limit theirs to selected sportsbook markets. Betfred splits its £50 into sports free bets and acca free bets. Virgin Bet and LiveScore Bet reserve £10 for Bet Builders. Betway’s tokens each carry their own restrictions.

Getting the most from a free bet
Because the stake is not returned, a free bet is worth more at bigger odds. In a fair market, the expected value of a £10 stake-not-returned free bet works out like this:

Real bookmaker prices include a margin, so actual values are a little lower, but the pattern holds. Using a free bet at 1.5 throws away most of its value; using it at 4.0 to 6.0 keeps most of it. The trade-off is that bigger odds lose more often, so expect more variance.

Losses back
QuinnBet refunds 50% of your first day’s net losses as a free bet, up to £25. If you end the day up, or your losses are under £5, a qualifying £10 bet at 2.0 still earns a £5 free bet. It is a safety net rather than a guaranteed bonus.

Claiming a free bet, step by step
- Pick one offer at a time. Read the qualifying odds, the minimum stake and the deadline before you register.
- Register through the offer. Some bookmakers require you to opt in at sign-up, and some, such as Unibet, ask you to opt in before you bet.
- Enter any Promo Code at registration. bet365 accepts Promo Code 365GMBLR, but says plainly that it does not change the offer amount. Matchbook requires NEW30 for its free bets.
- Deposit with an eligible method. Usually a debit card. Check the minimum: SBK asks for £10 on the first deposit.
- Place the qualifying bet. Hit the minimum odds and stake, and do not cash it out. QuinnBet explicitly rules out cash out on qualifying bets.
- Wait for settlement. Free bets usually arrive after the qualifying bet settles. SBK says within 48 hours; Virgin Bet and LiveScore Bet give you seven days to accept them.
- Use them before they expire. Seven days is standard. Unused free bets disappear.

Why a free bet does not arrive
Most missing free bets come down to one of five causes. The qualifying bet was below the minimum odds, or placed with a payment method the offer excludes. It was cashed out, or placed on an excluded market such as virtual sports. Or it has not settled yet. An ante-post bet on an event weeks away will not trigger an offer that needs settlement within 14 days.
If none of those apply, contact the bookmaker’s customer service before the offer window closes. Keep a screenshot of the bet slip.
Promo Codes and free bets
Only a few of the offers in our list use a Promo Code. Where one exists, we print it on the offer card. Never use codes copied from unofficial sources: a wrong code can mean registering without the offer attached, and it cannot always be added afterwards.
Some deals are not free bets at all. 247bet, for example, runs a 100% matched sports bonus up to £50 with 5x wagering on bonus plus deposit, at minimum odds of 3/4. That is a different structure from a free bet, with its own trade-offs.

Free bets for existing customers
Sign-up offers are a one-time deal, but most bookmakers keep running promotions for existing customers. Expect price boosts, acca insurance, free bet clubs that reward a weekly staking target, and racing concessions such as Best Odds Guaranteed. Under the 2026 rules, all of these must be single-product and carry no more than 10x wagering.
Weekly free bet clubs deserve the same caution as sign-up offers. If a club wants a set stake each week in return for a small free bet, only join if you would have bet that much anyway.
Free bets for racing
Most of these offers work on horse racing. The 1/2 qualifying odds at Coral, Ladbrokes and Spreadex are easy to meet on a favourite, and SBK’s 3.0 minimum suits racing better than most football markets. Spreadex also lets you qualify with a £10 each-way bet.

Free bet terms glossary
- Qualifying bet: the cash bet you must place to trigger the offer.
- Stake not returned (SNR): the free bet amount is not included in your winnings.
- Bet Credits: bet365’s name for free bet funds. Returns exclude the Bet Credits stake.
- Free bet token: a single-use free bet of a fixed value, as at Betway.
- Acca free bet: can only be used on an accumulator, often with a minimum number of selections.
- Bet Builder free bet: can only be used on a combined same-event bet.
- Settlement: when the result is confirmed and the bet is paid or lost. Most offers trigger on settlement, not placement.
- Expiry: how long you have to use the free bet once credited. Seven days is the norm.

Free bets under the 2026 rules
The Gambling Commission’s promotions changes took effect on 19 January 2026. Two affect free bets.
First, wagering on bonuses is capped at 10x. Most mainstream free bets already had no wagering on winnings, but a few smaller networks still attach 1x wagering and a maximum conversion. Second, mixed-product offers are banned. A sportsbook offer can no longer require you to play casino games, or any other product, to qualify.

FAQ
Do I get my stake back on a free bet?
Almost never. On UK free bets the stake is not returned, so a £10 free bet that wins at odds of 3.0 pays £20, not £30. Every sportsbook offer in our list states that the free bet stake is excluded from returns.
Can I withdraw free bet winnings?
Yes, at the major UK bookmakers winnings from a free bet are paid as cash and can be withdrawn. Some smaller networks attach a 1x wagering requirement and a maximum conversion to free bet winnings, so check the terms.
What are qualifying odds on a free bet offer?
The minimum odds your first bet must be placed at to trigger the offer. In our list they range from 1/2 (1.5) at Coral, Ladbrokes and Spreadex to 3.0 at SBK. Bets at shorter odds do not qualify.
Which UK free bet offer is the best value?
On headline value, Betfred, Coral and SBK all give £50. Coral's is easiest to claim, needing a £10 bet at 1/2. Spreadex gives the most variety, mixing fixed-odds free bets with football and racing spread bets.
Can I use a free bet on any market?
Not always. Many free bets are limited to selected sportsbook markets, and some are reserved for accumulators or Bet Builders. Betfred, for example, splits its £50 into three sports free bets and two acca free bets.
