What a promo code actually does at a UK betting site

A Promo Code, bonus code or sign-up code is a tag. When you type it in, the operator attaches a particular welcome offer to your account, and its systems then watch for the qualifying deposit or bet that releases the reward. Operators run several offers at once, for different products and different marketing partners, and the code is how they tell them apart.

That has two practical consequences. First, the code has to be in place before you do the thing that qualifies, which usually means at registration. Second, a code is not a key to a secret, bigger bonus. The offer behind it is set out in the operator’s own terms, and those terms decide what you get. bet365 says so in as many words: its bonus code 365GMBLR “does not change the offer amount in any way”.

The value of a code therefore lies entirely in the offer it points to, and those offers vary far more than their headlines suggest. A £30 free bet that needs one bet at evens is a different proposition from £30 in credits released by £10 of bets at 1/5, and both differ again from an exchange code that pays nothing up front but cuts your costs for months.

Where to enter a sign-up code: registration, deposit or opt-in

Most failed claims come down to a code entered in the wrong place, or too late. The codes we list fall into three groups.

Promo codes entered on the registration form

This is the most common home for a sign-up code. Smarkets’ terms state that COMMFREE must be entered “in the promo code field during registration”. William Hill’s S30, Matchbook’s REBATE20 and COMMFREE110, easyBet’s EB20 and Betfred Bingo’s BINGO100 are all attached when you register, and bet365 lets you add 365GMBLR at the same stage. Smarkets spells out what happens if you forget: eligible new users who skip the code are put on the standard 2% commission rate automatically when they first deposit.

Bonus codes entered before or with the first deposit

Betfred Games asks you to register and enter SPINS before you deposit. Wink Bingo takes WINK50 with your first deposit, from the Offers tab. Swift Casino and Luna Casino credit their match bonus and spins automatically on a qualifying first deposit, and both let you request cancellation if you would rather play without the bonus.

Codes that also need an opt-in

Some offers need a code and a separate opt-in. William Hill Vegas wants you to register with WHV200, then opt in on the promotion page and, within seven days, deposit and stake £10 on the advertised game. Heart Bingo also asks new customers to opt in. Missing the opt-in has the same result as missing the code.

Why many UK welcome offers need no Promo Code

Plenty of operators have dropped codes altogether. The Betfred, Betway, Coral, Ladbrokes and Unibet sports offers on our list carry no Promo Code, and our offer cards show “Applied automatically” wherever that is the case. The welcome offer is attached to every new account that meets the deposit or betting condition. Anyone who comes across a page promising a code that beats an operator’s advertised offer should be sceptical. The operator’s terms are the only thing that counts, and an offer that does not appear in them will not be honoured.

Free bet promo codes from bet365, William Hill and easyBet

Three of our sportsbook codes lead to free bets, and the trigger is different in each case. At bet365, 365GMBLR sits alongside an offer that pays 300% of your deposit in Bet Credits, up to £30. Deposit £5 and you get £15; deposit £10 or more and you get the full £30. The credits are released once you have settled qualifying bets to the value of your deposit, capped at £10, at odds of 1/5 or bigger.

William Hill’s S30 asks for a £10 first deposit and a £10 single at evens or bigger from your main balance. Three £10 free bets follow once it settles, whether it wins or loses. easyBet’s EB20 sets a higher bar of £20, placed and settled at odds of 2.0 or more across at least two different events, but lets singles, multiples and Bet Builders count, and pays four £5 free bets earmarked for football, racing, multiples and any market.

In all three cases the free bet stake is not returned with your winnings. A £10 free bet on a 3/1 winner pays £30, not £40, so these offers are worth more on bigger prices. Set side by side, bet365’s offer is the easiest to release, William Hill’s the simplest to understand, and easyBet’s the best suited to someone who already bets on accumulators.

Exchange promo codes: 0% commission and loss rebates

On a betting exchange you bet against other customers rather than a bookmaker, and the exchange makes its money by taking commission, a percentage of your net winnings. Smarkets and Matchbook both put their standard rate at 2%, with nothing charged on a losing market. Exchange sign-up codes therefore tend to cut that charge rather than hand out free bets.

Smarkets’ COMMFREE removes commission on bets that settle within 60 days of your first deposit of £10 or more. Matchbook’s COMMFREE110 does the same on sports bets for 110 days counted from registration, and Matchbook’s welcome page puts the value at up to £1,000. Matchbook’s other code, REBATE20, takes a different approach, returning 20% of qualifying losses on Matchbook Exchange markets during your first 30 days, up to £1,000.

The sums show who benefits. Smarkets’ own illustration is a £100 back bet at 5.50: the £450 in winnings would normally cost £9 in commission, which COMMFREE removes. A customer who wins £2,000 across two months saves £40. Commission codes reward volume, while a rebate suits someone who expects a bumpy first month. Casino bonus codes: free spins and matched deposits under the 10x cap

The six casino codes fall into two camps. bet365 Casino, William Hill Vegas and Betfred Games give free spins for a small deposit or stake. bet365’s spins arrive through up to ten daily reveals and their winnings carry no wagering at all. William Hill Vegas pays 200 spins at 10p for a £10 stake, though the spin winnings must be wagered 10x on the advertised game and are capped at £30. Betfred Games gives 200 spins at 10p when you stake £10 on slots within 14 days of a debit card deposit.

Swift, Luna and Winomania give a matched deposit bonus with spins on top, each with 10x wagering, the maximum now allowed. Swift matches 100% up to £25 with 100 spins on Book of Dead, and Luna 100% up to £50 with 50 spins, both with a £10 minimum deposit and 30 days to complete the wagering. Winomania’s offer, up to £50 plus 50 spins, expires after just two days and caps cash-outs from bonus winnings at three times the bonus.

Bingo promo codes from Mecca, Heart, Kitty, Wink and Betfred

Five bingo sites use codes: MECCA, HEART, KITTY, WINK50 and BINGO100. They range from Heart’s 500 free tickets, whose winnings are paid as cash, to Wink’s 500% bonus with 10x wagering and a five-day expiry. Betfred Bingo’s BINGO100 pays a £10 bingo bonus and 100 free tickets of up to 10p each for a £10 stake on bingo tickets, with the bonus to be wagered through just once. Mecca lets you choose between a £20 bingo bonus and 50 free spins, each with a £10 Club Voucher.

Payment methods that can void a promo code

Whatever the code, the deposit method is the condition most likely to cost you the offer. E-wallets and prepaid cards are the usual casualties. William Hill excludes PayPal, Apple Pay, Skrill and NETELLER among others. Smarkets excludes Skrill, Neteller, PayPal and virtual or prepaid cards, naming virtual Monzo cards specifically. Matchbook and easyBet exclude first deposits by Skrill, Neteller or Paysafecard. bet365 bars Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, paysafecard and prepaid cards until your identity has been fully verified.

The pattern is consistent enough to give one piece of advice: make the qualifying deposit with a debit card, and switch to a preferred wallet afterwards. Credit cards are not an alternative, since the Gambling Commission banned their use for gambling in April 2020.

Minimum odds, expiry dates and household limits on sign-up offers

Beyond payment, a handful of conditions separate a straightforward offer from an awkward one. Minimum odds range from 1/5 (1.20) at bet365 to evens (2.0) at William Hill and easyBet, which makes the last two harder to clear on a favourite. Bet type matters too: William Hill’s qualifying bet must be a single, while easyBet counts singles, multiples and Bet Builders.

Time limits are tight. bet365 Bet Credits expire after seven days, as do William Hill’s free bets, and bet365 gives you 30 days from registration to claim. Smarkets, Matchbook and easyBet all limit their sign-up offers to one per individual, family, household address, email address and shared computer, which rules out a second claim from the same home.

Linked brands bring their own rules. easyBet and Matchbook are both run by Triplebet Limited, and existing Matchbook customers cannot claim easyBet’s offer. Taking part in easyBet’s EB20 offer or Matchbook’s COMMFREE110 also rules you out of future 0% commission promotions, so it pays to decide which you want before registering with either.

How the January 2026 Gambling Commission rules changed promo codes

Gambling Commission rules that took effect on 19 January 2026 changed what a promo code can lead to. No bonus may now carry wagering of more than 10x, and operators can no longer offer incentives that require you to play across different products, such as a free bet that only arrives after you play slots. bet365, for example, runs separate offers for its sportsbook and casino, each with its own claim, and William Hill keeps S30 for sport and WHV200 for its Vegas casino.

The standing protections still apply. You must be 18 or over, your age and identity must be verified before you deposit or play, credit cards cannot be used for gambling, and every online operator must be part of GAMSTOP, the national self-exclusion scheme. On slots, stakes are capped at £5 a spin, or £2 if you are aged 18 to 24. Since October 2021 no online operator may let you reverse a withdrawal request.
