The second World Humanoid Robot Games ended on August 26 at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval with records in almost every running event. We look at what happened, and what the numbers do and do not prove.

World Humanoid Robot Games 2026 results: track

Winners and times are from the Beijing municipal government’s results summary. Several teams also set competition records in other track and field events.

Who built the winners

The Tiangong name runs through the results. Tiangong Ultra and Tiangong Omni both come from the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, which has turned the Games into its shop window. Honor, better known for smartphones, brought Lightning. The same robot finished Beijing’s humanoid half-marathon in April 2026 in 50 minutes 26 seconds, against a 2025 winning time of 2 hours 40 minutes 42 seconds. The sub-Bolt heats

The heats on August 22 produced the photos that went around the world. According to Reuters reporting carried by the South China Morning Post:

• Tiangong Ultra: 9.39 seconds.
• Lightning (Honor): 9.47 seconds.
• A Unitree Robotics entry: 12.41 seconds, last in the heat.

One caveat matters. Robot times are not human times. Robots compete in their own size classes on their own rules, and nothing here is ratified by World Athletics. Comparing 8.64 to 9.58 is a headline, not a sporting result.

The 1,500m is the bigger story

Sprinting rewards motors and stride. Middle distance tests what the industry has struggled with: thermal management, battery draw and staying balanced for nearly 150 seconds without a stumble. Tianzhuo Team’s 2:21.64 is almost three times faster than the 2025 winning time and comfortably inside the human world record of 3:26. Organizers also cut the 1,500m time limit from 40 minutes to 15 for 2026.

Beyond the track: scenario events

The Games had 21 scenario events in 2026, up from six. These test the jobs humanoid makers are actually trying to sell:

• Smart Charging Service: 30 minutes to unplug, charge and return connectors for three vehicles.
• General Service: many robots autonomously arranged nameplates, printed documents and shredded paper.
• Fine manipulation: eight tests, including picking up beans and tightening screws.

Scenario events allowed some remote operation, but organizers weighted fully autonomous performances more heavily. Our piece on what humanoid robots can actually do goes through why household tasks remain far harder than running.

Tennis, and a fall

Before the opening ceremony, Beijing’s Galbot showed off a humanoid trading forehands and backhands with human players. It lost balance chasing a ball, fell backward, got up and carried on, as the SCMP reported. Balance, limited autonomy and battery life are still the weak points.

The medal schedule

Beijing’s preview set out how the five days were structured. Opening night on August 22 featured a 7-a-side soccer exhibition plus the 100m and 400m preliminaries. Twelve gold medals were decided on August 23. Weightlifting awarded two golds, lightweight and heavyweight, on August 24. The freestyle fighting finals and the 5-a-side soccer final closed out the competition before the closing ceremony on August 26.

Preliminary rounds were removed for 2026, and time limits were cut hard. The 100m limit fell to one minute (from three) and the 400m to five (from 15). The 1,500m limit dropped to 15 minutes (from 40). A robot that could not finish fast was simply out.

Off the field: robots selling robots

The Games are also a retail event. More than 100 robot-themed products launched, and the on-site store sold over 200,000 yuan of merchandise on opening day. A leisure market in the Ice Ribbon complex had 70 stalls, 28 of them staffed by robot vendors. Champion robots were expected to make pop-up appearances in Beijing neighborhoods afterward.

What the 2026 results prove

Three things. Locomotion is close to solved for straight-line running on a flat track. Autonomy rules are now strict enough that most results reflect the robot’s own software. And manipulation, not speed, is where the gap to useful work remains.

For investors, that is the line between a viral clip and a product. For sports fans, the next step is head-to-head formats such as fighting and soccer under the same autonomy rules. Our robot combat sports hub tracks them.

Can you bet on robot athletics?

No. No US state-regulated or UK-licensed sportsbook lists markets on the Games. Regulated prediction markets list contracts on AI and technology questions, which is the nearest legal option for forecasting this space. Trading event contracts involves risk of loss.

That is a bet on where the audience already is. BattleBots co-founder Edward Roski pointed to nearly 3 million YouTube subscribers and more than 10 million views in a single month when announcing the season.

What the BattleBots Pro League is

The Pro League is a new elite tier inside the main BattleBots season. According to the official announcement:

• 24 robots from around the world fight in Group Stage matches inside the BattleBox, the bulletproof arena with hazards.
• Each group winner advances to a winner-takes-all knockout stage.
• The final crowns the first BattleBots Pro League World Champion and awards the Bright Data Pro League trophy.

The Pro League page shows six groups, A to F, with teams from the US, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Brazil, the UK and India.

The robots to know

BattleBots’ own posts billed the Grand Championship as Witch Doctor against The Twins, with Manta and Minotaur meeting for third place. Rookie Manta, which BattleBots credits to Nick Dobrikov, was one of the stories of the season. The winner takes home the Giant Wrench.

Orbitron and the AI question

BattleBots introduced Canada’s Orbitron as “the world’s first AI-controlled robot.” The show has not published technical detail on how much of each fight the AI handles. Treat the claim as marketing until the builders explain it.

Even partial autonomy would be a real change. Combat robots are driven by humans with radio transmitters. The hard problems for an AI driver are obvious. It has to track an opponent through sparks and debris, judge the angle of a spinner and react to hazards in a fraction of a second. If Orbitron can do any of that without a thumb on the stick, it is ahead of most humanoid fight leagues, which are still entirely piloted. The sponsor fits the theme. Bright Data is a web data infrastructure company that sells to AI developers and says more than 20,000 organizations use it. CEO Or Lenchner described the company’s staff as fans. Its sponsorship also brings data into the broadcast: each episode includes Bright Data-powered statistics and fan polls, and the company has talked about competition dashboards.

A short history of BattleBots

BattleBots has run robot combat since 1999. It aired on Comedy Central, then ABC and Discovery, and has staged the live BattleBots: Destruct-A-Thon show in Las Vegas since 2003. The company owns the 1,000-seat BattleBots Arena and runs STEM programs, including BattleBots Camps across the US.

The format has stayed close to the original: two remote-controlled robots, a bulletproof box with hazards, three minutes, and a judges’ decision if neither is knocked out. What has changed is the engineering. Modern heavyweights carry spinning weapons that can throw an opponent across the arena, and builders treat weight, armor and weapon energy as a trade-off problem.

What an AI driver would need to win

• Tracking: cameras have to follow an opponent through sparks, smoke and debris.
• Prediction: it must judge where a spinner’s weapon is about to be, not where it is.
• Hazard awareness: the BattleBox has floor hazards and kill zones that a human driver learns by eye.
• Recovery: after a big hit, the robot has to work out which way up it is and whether it can still drive.

Autonomous racers and humanoid labs are working on each of those problems too. That is why Orbitron’s results will be watched well beyond the robot combat community.

Why the YouTube move matters

Robot combat has always had a distribution problem. Shows were canceled, revived and moved between networks. Going free and global on YouTube trades license fees for reach and a sponsor, the same playbook drone racing leagues use. The Drone Champions League premieres its entire championship on YouTube.

It also makes BattleBots the reference point for every newer format, from bladed humanoid fights in San Francisco to the Ultimate Fighting Bots league. Our robot combat sports hub compares them.

Can you bet on BattleBots?

No. US state-regulated sportsbooks do not list BattleBots markets, and there is a structural reason. Fights are filmed in the spring and released weekly months later. Results exist before episodes air, so there is no fair pre-fight market to offer.

Nine months earlier, at the same event, an AI had beaten three former world champions. The rematch went the human’s way, narrowly, and the margin says a lot about where autonomous flight stands.

How the human beat the AI

The Human vs AI Challenge was a best-of-nine head-to-head. Kim, a former DRL world champion, faced the drone from TII Racing. The team, from Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute, had just set the fastest autonomous lap of the event.

According to TII’s own account, Kim let the AI take early leads in the opening heats and focused on controlled lines. As the series went on, crashes started to appear in the AI’s runs. At 4–4, the drone hit a gate pushing to keep pace and stayed down.

His pre-race routine was simpler than the machine’s: “I can do it, I can do it, I can do it.”

The deciding factor: recovery

TII senior researcher Aaesha Al Shehhi was blunt about the gap. “The privilege that he has is that he can recover,” she said. A human who clips a gate can often save the run. An AI trained on clean laps may not know how.

She also pointed to perception. “If the drone is not trained for certain lighting, it can affect the camera,” she said. The team now trains its models with disturbances such as lighting changes and nearby drones.

The rest of the results

The AI-only races showed how fast the machines have become, per A2RL’s official results:

TII Racing is about two and a half years old, Al Shehhi said, competing against teams with more than a decade in the field. “This year, we managed to be the fastest team in the world.”

Four drones, one command

Earlier on finals day, organizers launched four autonomous drones simultaneously from a single command, which TII described as believed to be a first. The result was messy: two clipped gates early, one flew off course and one completed the track cleanly. Multi-agent racing is where the next round of progress has to come.

The rules that make it fair

Every autonomous drone flew with one forward-facing monocular RGB camera and an inertial measurement unit. LiDAR, stereo vision, GPS and external positioning systems were banned. The idea is to give the AI roughly what a human pilot sees through FPV goggles, so gains must come from software, not sensors.

“What stands out this year is the collective progress across the field,” said Stephane Timpano, CEO of ASPIRE. Teams were reaching higher speeds with greater stability, he said, almost entirely through software. TII Racing’s technical director Giovanni Pau said the fastest lap “reflects the depth of our software development and testing.”

From AI win to human win: the 2025 context

The first A2RL x DCL Autonomous Drone Championship, in April 2025, went the other way. TU Delft’s MAVLab won the AI Grand Challenge, covering two laps and 22 gates of a 170-meter course in 17 seconds. It then beat a world-leading human pilot, per the Khaleej Times. MAVLab says its AI beat three former DCL world champions in a knockout, reaching 95.8 km/h, with a neural network that commands the motors directly.

Who is Minchan Kim

Kim, who races as MCK FPV, has one of the deepest résumés in FPV racing. He joined Britain’s XBlades at 16 and won DCL Pilot of the Year in 2020. He went into DRL’s February 2025 Miami Invitational as defending world champion.

He was not done after Abu Dhabi. In October he won the MultiGP Championship in Carrollton, Texas, his third MultiGP title, after nearly two years away from elite FPV competition, per MultiGP. He set the event’s fastest lap and went undefeated through the A Main. Our MultiGP finals page has the results.

What the 5–4 result means

The speed gap has closed. On a clean track, the AI was already quick enough to lead heats against one of the world’s best pilots. TII’s 12.032-second lap shows how fast vision-only autonomy has become.

The reliability gap has not. Kim won because the machine could not recover from contact. That is the same problem facing autonomous cars, which A2RL races in a separate series; see our A2RL autonomous car racing guide.

The next match is close to a coin flip. A best-of-nine that goes to a deciding heat is about as close as sport gets. If the AI teams solve recovery, the human edge may not survive another season.

Can you bet on human vs AI?

We found no regulated sportsbook or prediction market that listed this race. Binary human-vs-machine outcomes suit event contracts well, though, and prediction markets already trade AI questions, such as which company will have the top-ranked AI model at year end. That contrast, from the second World Humanoid Robot Games, is the clearest answer yet to what humanoid robots can do. They move brilliantly. They still struggle to handle things.

A robot ran 100m faster than Usain Bolt

In a preliminary heat on August 22, Tiangong Ultra from the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center ran 9.39 seconds. Honor’s Lightning ran 9.47. Both beat Bolt’s 9.58, according to Reuters reporting in the SCMP. A year earlier Tiangong Ultra won the event in 21.50 seconds. By the final, Tianjiao Team’s robot had taken the large-robot title in 8.64.

Fast doesn’t yet mean fully controlled

Raw speed is mostly a hardware story: motor torque, stride length, a light frame. The harder part is control at speed. Robots that sprint well can still be poor at stopping, turning or reacting to something unexpected. They also run in their own size classes, on surfaces and lanes built for them.

The 1,500m is the more telling number. Organizers cut the time limit from 40 minutes to 15 and required the race to be run autonomously. The winning time dropped from 6:34.40 in 2025 to 2:21.64. Holding balance, managing heat and battery draw over more than two minutes is a real advance.

Tennis may tell us more than running

Before the opening ceremony, Galbot put a humanoid on a tennis court against human players. It traded forehands and backhands, then lost its balance chasing a ball and fell backward. It got up and resumed play, the SCMP reported. Galbot has claimed its robots can sustain more than 100 consecutive autonomous rallies, which is a company claim rather than an independent result.

Tennis is harder than sprinting because the robot has to predict where a ball will be, move to it and swing a racket in one coordinated action. The fall is the useful bit: getting up and carrying on is exactly the kind of recovery a robot needs outside a stadium.

Then we get to the laundry

The 2026 Games had 21 scenario events, up from six, covering household, hotel, industrial and emergency tasks. There were also eight fine-manipulation tests, such as picking up beans and tightening screws.

The household event was set in a smart-home showroom. Robots had 30 minutes for one sequence: tidy a living room, fold clothes and put them away, load laundry, hang clean washing and receive a package. German broadcaster ZDF watched about five hours of the multi-day competition and saw no robot complete the full routine.

Simpler service tasks went better. In the General Service event, many robots arranged nameplates, printed documents and shredded paper autonomously. In Smart Charging Service, they had 30 minutes to unplug, charge and return connectors for three vehicles, per Beijing’s official summary.

Why is laundry so difficult?

• Cloth has no fixed shape. A shirt changes every time it is touched, so the robot cannot plan a grasp from a model.
• Fingers matter. Folding needs pinches, smoothing and regrasping, which most humanoid hands do poorly.
• Errors compound. A routine of five tasks fails if any step fails. A 90% success rate per step gives under 60% for the chain.
• Small details ruin tasks. Beijing’s coverage noted that a wrong spoon angle or pouring speed can spoil a kitchen task.

Autonomy matters more this year

For 2026, organizers required all track and other competitive events to be completed fully autonomously. The 100m and 400m hurdle races were the exceptions, according to the official event preview. Scenario events allowed teleoperation in some cases but scored a remotely operated run at half the weight of an autonomous one.

That matters because many viral humanoid videos are teleoperated. A robot doing chores with a human in a VR headset nearby is a demo of hardware, not intelligence. The same distinction runs through robot combat, where nearly every humanoid fight is still human-piloted.

What humanoid robots can do: a scorecard

The ratings are our editorial judgment based on the results above, not measured scores.

What this means for buyers and investors

If a company shows you a humanoid sprinting, you are watching the solved part of the problem. Ask instead how long it can work autonomously on a multi-step task, how often it needs a human to intervene, and how it handles objects it has never seen. Those are the numbers that decide whether a humanoid can earn its keep in a warehouse, a hotel or a home.

Why the Games are useful

Company demos are edited. The World Humanoid Robot Games are timed, refereed and public, and failures happen on camera. With 2,056 robots from 666 teams registered in 2026, it is the closest thing the industry has to an independent benchmark.

The harder test is whether these skills work together. A robot that can run, balance, see and grip separately is a set of demos. One that can do them in sequence, in a messy room, without a human on a remote, is a product. Beijing showed the first. The second is still ahead.

For forecasters, the gap between speed and dexterity is the kind of milestone question AI prediction markets tend to price. Trading event contracts involves risk of loss.

Why Blue UAS exists

Federal security concerns about foreign-made drones pushed the Pentagon to create a vetted list that agencies could buy from with confidence. The worry was mainly Chinese components in cameras, radios and flight controllers. Blue UAS began as a Defense Innovation Unit program. Many state and local agencies now also use it as the reference list when writing tenders and grant conditions.

That reach is why manufacturers chase Blue status even for civilian products. Being on the list opens public-safety and infrastructure budgets that are otherwise closed.

US-made, NDAA and Blue UAS: what’s the difference?

The Blue UAS list moved from the Defense Innovation Unit to the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) in December 2025. DCMA has been speeding up onboarding in 2026. The list covers exact configurations, not brands.

Skydio is the best-known US drone maker, with a lineup aimed squarely at public safety and government buyers.

• X10D: the US-built defense and government version, already Blue cleared.
• R10: for indoor and GPS-denied work; added in July 2026.
• Skydio Dock for X10 and R10: added in July 2026.

Freefly Astro Max Blue: why configuration matters

Freefly’s Astro Max shows the trap. The Blue configuration, listed at $28,995 in August 2026, is designed and assembled in the US. It uses a Blue-approved Doodle Labs radio and the Pilot Pro controller, and carries up to 3 kg of RGB, thermal or multispectral payload. The standard Astro Max can ship with a Herelink radio that Freefly says is not NDAA or Blue approved. Same airframe, different answer.

Vantage Robotics Trace

A 153-gram nano drone with up to 36 minutes of flight, EO and thermal imaging, obstacle avoidance and GPS-denied operation. Vantage says it is designed, sourced and built in the US and Blue UAS Cleared, with new orders quoted at about 90 days. One spec section on its site still said “Blue pending”, a reminder to check the list itself.

ModalAI Stinger and Seeker Vision FPV

ModalAI’s Stinger Vision FPV starts at $3,399.99 and ships from San Diego within 60 business days, with the US listed as country of origin. The Stinger and the 5-inch and 7-inch Seeker Vision FPV were added to the Blue List in 2025, mainly for government buyers. These are FPV airframes in the same family as the racing drones flown at events like the MultiGP Championship, built for a very different customer.

Other US-made Blue UAS platforms

• Ascent AeroSystems Spirit: coaxial design, designed and built in the US, Blue cleared and NDAA compliant, with modular batteries, comms and payloads.
• FlightWave Edge 130 (Red Cat): hybrid fixed-wing VTOL labeled Made in the USA and described as Blue certified, with claimed cruise endurance above 60 minutes.
• PDW C100: described as fully NDAA compliant and Blue certified, with up to 74 minutes of advertised endurance carrying its ISR payload.
• Teal Black Widow (Red Cat): US-manufactured, aimed at defense and security, Blue listed; it won the US Army’s Short Range Reconnaissance program.

Blue UAS does not mean made in America

Wingtra’s WingtraRAY surveying drone is Blue cleared and described as “engineered in Switzerland for the US.” Parrot’s ANAFI UKR, from France, is also stated as Blue certified and NDAA compliant. If country of origin matters to your buyer, check it separately.

Blue UAS is not FAA approval either

Blue status is a security and procurement designation. It says nothing about airworthiness. Commercial operators still fly under FAA Part 107. It generally requires a Remote Pilot Certificate, aircraft registration and Remote ID compliance, plus authorization or waivers for controlled airspace and some operations.

Do most drone buyers need Blue UAS?

No. Blue clearance matters for federal agencies, defense contractors and many state and local agencies whose rules or grants require it. A real-estate photographer, a farmer or a hobbyist does not need it, and will usually pay more for it. Check the current Blue List before buying

Because clearance applies to a specific configuration, buyers should confirm three things before purchase or bid:

1. The exact model and configuration appears on DCMA’s current Blue List.
2. The radio, controller and payload you are buying match the cleared configuration.
3. The country-of-origin claim meets your contract or grant terms.

The Blue List changes often, and 2026 has brought frequent additions. A model that was “pending” in a sales sheet may be cleared now, or not.

How we classified them

“Actively offered” means the maker lists a price, takes deposits and describes a build or delivery process. “Reservations” means you can pay to queue but no customer aircraft is promised this year. All performance figures below are manufacturer claims, not our tests.

Yivtol / Drone Spray Pro: from $59,000

The cheapest aircraft you can actually order comes from Drone Spray Pro, an Idaho company known for agricultural drones. Buyers can inspect aircraft, sit in the cockpit and watch demonstrations at its Rexburg facility. Aircraft not in stock take about 30 to 60 days to build after a deposit.

• BASIC (DSP 70): payload up to 198 lb, up to about 30 minutes of flight.
• PLUS (DSP 80): payload up to 264 lb.
• MAX (DSP 100): four batteries, claimed endurance of about 50 to 55 minutes.

The catch: safety costs another $20,000

The parachute and airbag package is a $20,000 option across the range, taking the DSP 70 to $79,000 before freight. Our DSP 70 deep look covers the specs and where you can legally fly it.

Jetson ONE: $148,000 and a 2028 wait

Jetson is the best-known name and has delivered a substantial number of chassis. On August 13, 2026, it announced its first customer delivery in Italy, after recognition under the Italian ultralight framework.

• $148,000, with an $8,000 non-refundable down payment.
• 2026 and 2027 production sold out; new orders get an estimated 2028 delivery.
• 210 lb pilot weight limit, about 20 minutes of flight, software-limited 63 mph top speed.
• An endurance test covered 11.02 miles in about 18.5 minutes.

Pivotal Helix: from $190,000

Pivotal’s earlier BlackFly aircraft reached private owners, and the Helix is its successor, designed around the US Part 103 ultralight rules. A fully refundable $9,000 reservation secures a 2026 delivery position, followed by a $50,000 production deposit. Pivotal requires buyers to complete its own flight training. The company says its aircraft have logged more than 10,000 flights at over 100 locations across its history. It received AS9100D aerospace quality certification in January 2026.

Rictor X4: the $39,900 question mark

Announced at CES 2026, the X4 is the cheapest personal eVTOL on paper. It costs $39,900 with a $5,000 deposit, and offers one seat, up to 100 kg payload and about 20 minutes of flight. Folding propellers let it ride in a pickup bed. Rictor promised first deliveries in Q2 2026. By late August there was no strong public evidence that customers had received aircraft. Treat the price as a target rather than a delivery quote.

LIFT HEXA: fly it for $199, but you can’t buy one

LIFT’s HEXA is an 18-motor electric ultralight. It is not for sale to the public, though a limited number have gone to public agencies, including first responders. What you can buy is a flight: LIFT’s public experiences in Austin, Texas, cost $199 including training. If you wonder if you would enjoy owning one, it is the cheapest test there is.

What about two-seat personal eVTOLs?

Two seats push an aircraft out of the Part 103 ultralight category and into ones that need certification and pilot qualifications. That is why none is available for delivery yet.

AIR ONE

A two-seat winged eVTOL aimed at more range and speed than the multirotors. In July 2026 AIR said its latest configuration was being prepared for piloted flight later in the year. No price has been published.

AirCar LightSport: about $99,000 (estimated)

Reservations cost $250 against an estimated $99,000 price. Production for 2026 and 2027 is sold out, so new reservations are for 2028. It targets the Light Sport Aircraft category, not Part 103, so you will need an appropriate pilot qualification.

Doroni H1-X

Doroni claims targets of 120 mph and 100 miles of range. Its plan treats 2026 as a development year, with certification in 2027 and first deliveries in 2028. Its SEC filing notes those timelines depend on development and financing.

So what can you actually buy?

• Buy and fly this year: Drone Spray Pro’s Yivtol range, from $59,000 ($79,000 with the safety package).
• Buy and wait: Jetson ONE (2028) or a Pivotal Helix delivery slot.
• Bet on a promise: Rictor X4, AirCar, Doroni.
• Just try one: a $199 LIFT HEXA flight in Austin.

The test that matters is not a render or a CES stand. It is whether a manufacturer can build, support and deliver aircraft to paying customers. Right now, few can.

The aircraft is the DSP 70 from Drone Spray Pro, a company better known for agricultural spraying drones. We look at what it is, what the rules allow and how it compares with rivals.

What is the DSP 70?

The DSP 70, sold as the Yivtol BASIC, is a single-seat electric VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft. Eight electric motors provide lift. Buyers visit Drone Spray Pro’s facility in Rexburg, Idaho, where they can sit in the cockpit and watch demonstration flights. Aircraft not in stock are built in about 30 to 60 days after a deposit.

Those are seller claims, not independent tests. The safety package is optional, which makes the effective starting price $79,000 before freight. Drone Spray Pro also lists larger models, the DSP 80 at $79,000 and the four-battery DSP 100 at $118,999. Our guide to personal drones for sale compares the full range.

Is it really a drone?

Marketing calls it a personal drone. In regulatory terms, a person on board makes it an aircraft, and in the US the relevant category is the ultralight. That is very different from the commercial drones flown under Part 107, which have no one on board.

Do you really need no pilot license?

Under FAA Part 103, operators of qualifying ultralights need no pilot certificate, and the aircraft needs no registration or airworthiness certificate. To qualify, a powered ultralight must:

• carry one occupant and be used for recreation or sport only;
• weigh less than 254 lb empty, excluding certain safety equipment;
• be capable of no more than 55 knots at full power in level flight;
• stay within Part 103’s other performance limits.

There is no FAA knowledge test, minimum age or experience requirement for ultralight operators.

The catch is where you can fly

Part 103 is permissive about who flies and strict about where:

• No flights over congested areas of cities, towns or settlements, or over open-air assemblies of people.
• Daylight only, from sunrise to sunset, with limited twilight exceptions.
• Prior ATC authorization for Class A, B, C or D airspace, and some Class E airport areas.
• Visual reference with the surface at all times.

Put together, that rules out commuting. A personal VTOL is for rural land, private property and open countryside, not the school run.

And you probably shouldn’t fly one untrained

No license does not mean no skill. Drone Spray Pro’s sales process includes training and tethered demonstration flights when conditions allow. Rivals go further: Pivotal requires buyers to complete its own flight training.

The DSP 70 is no longer alone

Jetson’s ONE is the best known, with about 20 minutes of flight, a 210 lb pilot limit and a software-limited 63 mph top speed. Rictor’s X4 is the cheapest on paper, though we found little public evidence of customer deliveries as of late August 2026.

The technology may be ahead of the use case

Electric multirotor flight is no longer the hard part. Batteries are. Thirty minutes of claimed endurance, with a reserve, means a practical flight of perhaps 20 minutes. Add Part 103’s limits and these aircraft fit a narrow set of uses: rural property owners, aviation enthusiasts, resorts and private estates.

That looks less like flying cars and more like jet skis. It is an expensive recreational vehicle with a strong novelty factor and a defined place to use it.

What to ask before you pay a deposit

1. Is the aircraft in stock? If not, get the 30-to-60-day build window in writing.
2. Does my configuration stay within Part 103? Optional extras add weight, and the empty-weight limit is strict.
3. What training is included? Ask how many tethered and free flights you get before you fly alone.
4. Where will I fly it? Check the airspace around your land before you buy, not after.
5. Who services it? An eight-motor electric aircraft needs batteries, motors and controllers maintained by someone who knows them.
6. What does insurance cost? Get a quote early; it may change the math on the $20,000 safety package.

Who should actually buy one?

A personal VTOL makes most sense for someone who already owns open land away from towns and has the budget for an expensive toy. It suits a buyer who wants the experience of flight without years of training. For anyone else, a few test flights, or a ride on a commercial flight experience, will answer the question for far less money.

So are personal drones finally real?

Yes, with conditions. You can pay a deposit, visit a factory and take delivery of a single-seat electric VTOL in 2026. You cannot fly it over town, at night or very far. The DSP 70 is the most affordable way into a category that is real but restricted, and recreational for now.

The Games are part sport, part trade show and part public stress test for humanoid robots. They are also a statement of intent from the city that hosts them.

What are the World Humanoid Robot Games?

A multi-sport event for humanoid robots, staged in Beijing. Teams from universities, research centers and companies enter robots in athletic contests and in practical “scenario” tasks such as sorting, cleaning and household work.

The first edition in August 2025 drew more than 500 robots from 280 teams across 16 countries. The second, held on August 22–26, 2026, at the National Speed Skating Oval (the “Ice Ribbon” built for the 2022 Winter Olympics), was far bigger.

Beijing’s big bet on embodied AI

China has made humanoid robots and “embodied intelligence” a policy priority, and Beijing wants to be the industry’s capital. The Games give local players a global stage. The Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center’s Tiangong robots, Honor’s Lightning and Unitree’s machines all ran in front of international media. Overseas teams from countries including the US, Germany and Japan took part in the first edition.

The commercial side is not subtle. The 2026 venue’s souvenir shop sold more than 200,000 yuan of robot merchandise on opening day. At its market, 28 of 70 stalls were staffed by robots.

What events are included?

Competitive events

Nine disciplines in 2026: track and field, soccer (5-a-side, plus a 7-a-side exhibition), freestyle fighting, martial arts, dancesport (street dance, ballroom and cheerleading), gymnastics, weightlifting, obstacle races and standing long jump. Weightlifting had two gold medals, lightweight and heavyweight.

Scenario-based events

These matter more to investors. The 2026 Games had 21 scenario events, up from six, covering household chores, hotel service, industrial work and emergency response. Eight more were fine-manipulation tests, such as picking up beans and tightening screws. In the Smart Charging Service event, robots had 30 minutes to unplug, charge and return connectors for three vehicles.

Are the robots autonomous?

Mostly, now. In 2026 all track events and other competitive events had to be completed fully autonomously, except the 100m and 400m hurdle races. Time limits were cut too: the 100m went from three minutes to one, the 1,500m from 40 minutes to 15. Preliminary rounds were scrapped.

That rule change is the story of the year. In 2025 many robots were steered by handlers with remotes, and several collapsed or needed help. Our analysis of what humanoid robots can actually do looks at which skills held up.

The 2026 headline results

Winners as reported by Beijing’s official English portal after the Games closed on August 26:

• 100m (large robots): Tianjiao Team, 8.64 seconds.
• 100m (small robots): Tianxiao Team, 11.98 seconds.
• 400m (small robots): Tiangong Omni, Beijing Innovation Center of Humanoid Robotics, 45.66 seconds.
• 1,500m: Tianzhuo Team, 2:21.64.

The half-marathon context

The Games sit alongside Beijing’s humanoid half-marathon. In April 2026 Honor’s Lightning robot finished in 50 minutes 26 seconds. The 2025 winning time was 2 hours 40 minutes 42 seconds. Different event, same trend line.

Is this the beginning of robot sports betting?

Not yet. Sportsbooks need stable rules, verifiable participants and a results history. The Games changed their autonomy rules, time limits and event list between editions. There is also no independent way for a bettor to confirm that a robot is running its own software. No US state-regulated or UK-licensed sportsbook offers markets.

How to watch next time

Both editions have been held in Beijing in August. Tickets were sold through Chinese platforms such as Damai and Maoyan and, for overseas buyers, Damai International. In 2026, competition-day tickets started at 98 yuan and ceremony tickets at 128 yuan. Dates for a third edition have not been published yet.

If you are planning a trip, competition days offer the most action for the price. The final two days carry the fighting and soccer finals.

Our view

The World Humanoid Robot Games are the most useful public benchmark the humanoid industry has. Failures happen on camera, rules force autonomy and results are timed. Robots now outrun humans over 100m and 1,500m. They still struggle to fold a shirt. Watching that gap close, one edition at a time, is the reason to pay attention.
