For years, the “personal drone” has occupied roughly the same territory as the flying car: impressive videos, prototypes at technology shows and promises that ordinary people will soon be commuting through the air.
Then we came across something much more concrete.
Drone Spray Pro, an Idaho company better known for agricultural drones, is selling a single-seat electric VTOL aircraft starting at $59,000. You can book a demonstration in Rexburg, Idaho, put down a deposit and potentially have one built within 30 to 60 days if it isn’t already in stock.
It looks a little like someone enlarged a multirotor drone until there was enough room to put a person in the middle.
At $59,000, it is also getting close to luxury-car money rather than private-aircraft money.
But before imagining one parked next to the Tesla, there is a bigger question: where could you actually fly it?
We checked the advertised specifications against the FAA rules that make this type of aircraft possible in the US. The answer is more interesting — and considerably more restrictive — than “no pilot license required.”
What is the DSP 70?
The aircraft is the Yivtol BASIC, marketed by Drone Spray Pro as the DSP 70.
It is a single-seat electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, or eVTOL. Eight electric motors provide lift, so it can take off and land vertically without a conventional runway.

These are seller/manufacturer figures, not independent flight-test results. Actual endurance will inevitably depend on factors such as pilot weight, weather, temperature, battery condition and how the aircraft is flown.
The optional safety package is also worth noticing. Add the parachute and airbags and the headline $59,000 aircraft becomes a $79,000 purchase before delivery and other ownership costs.
Still, that’s relatively cheap in this particular corner of aviation.
Is it really a drone?
Not in the normal sense.
A drone is an unmanned aircraft. Once someone is sitting inside and controlling it, we are dealing with a manned aircraft, even if the motors, batteries and multirotor layout look familiar to drone pilots.
“Personal drone,” “passenger drone” and “human-carrying drone” are useful shorthand. Technically, personal eVTOL or ultralight vehicle is more accurate here.
And “ultralight” is the important word.
Do you really need no pilot license?
This part is true — with a significant qualification.
The FAA says operators of qualifying ultralight vehicles do not need a pilot certificate. Part 103 also removes the normal aircraft registration and airworthiness-certificate requirements.
That sounds remarkably relaxed for something that can carry a person into the air.
But an aircraft has to genuinely fall within Part 103.
For a powered ultralight, the federal rules require, among other things, that it:
- carries only one occupant;
- is intended only for recreation or sport;
- weighs less than 254 pounds empty, excluding certain safety equipment;
- stays within prescribed performance limits.
The regulations set a maximum full-power level-flight speed of 55 knots, for example.
So “no pilot license” doesn’t mean that an owner can use a personal eVTOL however they please. The aircraft configuration and the way it is operated both matter.
The real catch is where you can fly
This is where the flying-car comparison starts to fall apart.
Part 103 specifically prohibits flying an ultralight over a congested area of a city, town or settlement, or over an open-air assembly of people.
In other words, the obvious science-fiction use case — taking off near home, flying over traffic and landing downtown — is not what these rules were designed to allow.
There are other restrictions.
Ultralights normally operate between sunrise and sunset, with only limited twilight operations permitted under particular conditions. Flying in Class A, B, C or D airspace, or within certain Class E airport areas, requires prior authorization from air traffic control. The operator must also maintain visual reference with the surface.
That makes the DSP 70 much easier to imagine over suitable rural land than over Los Angeles, Miami or New York.
For now, a personal eVTOL under Part 103 looks less like an airborne commuter car and more like an unusually sophisticated recreational aircraft.
And you probably shouldn’t fly one completely untrained
Another oddity of Part 103 is that the FAA does not impose an aeronautical knowledge, age or experience requirement on ultralight operators.
Legally, that is very different from learning to fly a conventional airplane.
Practically, buying an aircraft and immediately taking off would be another matter.
Drone Spray Pro’s sales process includes an in-person visit in Idaho where prospective buyers can inspect the aircraft and cockpit. The company also offers training and says its team operates tethered demonstration flights when conditions allow.
That distinction matters.
Electronic stabilization and automated systems can make a multirotor eVTOL much simpler to control than a helicopter, but simple controls don’t remove weather, airspace, battery management or emergency decision-making from aviation.
“No pilot license required” is therefore better understood as a regulatory category than as evidence that flying one requires no preparation.
The DSP 70 is no longer alone
Perhaps the more significant story is that personal eVTOLs are starting to look like a small market rather than a collection of prototypes.
The Jetson ONE currently costs $148,000. Jetson advertises approximately 20 minutes of flight time, a maximum pilot weight of 210 pounds and a top speed limited to 63 mph. Its 2026 and 2027 production is sold out, with the company currently taking orders for estimated 2028 delivery.
Pivotal’s Helix launched at $190,000 and is also designed around the US Part 103 category. Pivotal requires its customers to complete its own flight training despite the lack of a federal pilot-license requirement.
At CES 2026, China’s Rictor went even lower, announcing its X4 at $39,900. The company said deliveries would begin in Q2 2026, although that price and schedule came from Rictor’s own launch announcement, so we would treat it differently from an aircraft with a more established delivery record.
Against those numbers, $59,000 starts to look notable.
Not cheap, certainly. But cheap enough that the comparison shifts from “private aircraft” toward “expensive recreational vehicle.”
The technology may be ahead of the use case
The machines increasingly exist. The harder question is what owners will do with them.
A claimed range of 21.7 miles and flight time of up to roughly 30 minutes could be perfectly adequate for recreational flying. It is much less convincing as everyday transportation once weather, reserves, landing areas and airspace restrictions enter the equation.
That may not matter.
Personal eVTOL manufacturers have spent years leaning on the imagery of flying cars and future urban mobility, but the first successful market may turn out to be much simpler.
Someone with rural property could take off vertically without building a runway. An aviation enthusiast could own something far easier to store than many conventional aircraft. Resorts, private estates and recreational operators are also easier to imagine than thousands of commuters flying above city streets.
Seen that way, the DSP 70 doesn’t have to replace a car to be interesting.
So are personal drones finally real?
Yes — although “personal aircraft” is probably the better description.
You can now find multiple companies offering single-seat electric VTOLs rather than merely showing prototypes. In the DSP 70’s case, the advertised entry price has fallen to $59,000, and the US ultralight framework can allow qualifying owners to fly without obtaining a conventional pilot certificate.
The trade-off is significant: limited payload, short endurance, weather dependence and strict limits on where and how they can be operated.
That makes the jet ski a better comparison than the flying car.
A jet ski didn’t replace the boat or the car. It simply created a new recreational machine that enough people decided was worth owning.
Personal eVTOLs may be heading in much the same direction.
