Top US online sportsbooks compared: App Store ratings for FanDuel, DraftKings, Hard Rock Bet, bet365, Fanatics and BetMGM

Online sports betting is now legal and live in 31 states plus Washington, DC, and roughly a dozen sportsbook brands share that market. This guide lists every licensed online sportsbook still operating in the US, describes the top ones in detail and compares their apps side by side. Welcome offers and Promo Codes come from each operator’s own pages. App ratings were checked on the US App Store on November 2, 2026.

These brands hold state licenses and take online bets today. The number in brackets is how many states or jurisdictions each lists on its own site or App Store page.

  • DraftKings Sportsbook (27 states, plus DC and Puerto Rico)
  • FanDuel Sportsbook (25 states, plus DC and Puerto Rico)
  • BetMGM (about 25 jurisdictions)
  • Caesars Sportsbook (about 24 states, plus DC and Puerto Rico)
  • Fanatics Sportsbook (23 states plus DC)
  • theScore Bet, formerly ESPN Bet (20 states plus DC)
  • bet365 (18 states plus DC)
  • BetRivers (15 states)
  • Bally Bet (12 states)
  • Hard Rock Bet (10 states, including Florida)
  • Circa Sports (6 states)
  • Ember Sportsbook, formerly Betly (Ohio and West Virginia)
  • Borgata Sports (New Jersey only)

Some states run a single operator. DraftKings is the only online sportsbook in New Hampshire and Oregon, BetRivers powers Delaware’s lottery sportsbook, and Hard Rock Bet holds Florida under the Seminole compact.

Several brands have left the market. Underdog closed its sportsbook in December 2025 and now offers only pick’em and prediction products, Betly became Ember in July 2026, and Resorts World Bet stopped reporting in New York in 2025.

The top online sportsbooks, ranked by popularity

  1. DraftKings Sportsbook

DraftKings is the largest sportsbook in New York by handle and the widest-reaching brand in the country, live in 27 states plus DC and Puerto Rico. It added Arkansas in early 2026, after Delaware North moved its Betly sportsbook there over to DraftKings, and it is the only online sportsbook in New Hampshire and Oregon.

The app is built around same game parlays, live betting and a large props menu, and it adds its own formats such as the NFL Moonshot game for the 2026 season. In states without a sportsbook license, the same app offers DraftKings Predictions, a federally regulated prediction market rather than a sportsbook.

DraftKings’ promotion pages sit behind a login, so check the current new-user offer in the app before you register. Its most recent public launch offer, for Arkansas in March 2026, was “bet $5 and get $300 in bonus bets.”

Who it suits: bettors who want the deepest parlay and props menus and one account that works across most legal states. sportsbook.draftkings.com

  2. FanDuel Sportsbook

FanDuel takes the largest share of sportsbook revenue in New York (38% in August 2026) and has the most-rated sports betting app in the US: 4.8 stars from 2.3 million ratings. It is live in 25 states plus DC and Puerto Rico, and added Arkansas in 2026.

Its November 2026 welcome offer gives new customers “$200 in Bonus Bets guaranteed by placing a qualifying wager of at least $5 each day for four consecutive days.” That is $50 in Bonus Bets a day, each set expiring after seven days. FanDuel says it does not use promo codes. The app is known for a clean bet slip, same game parlays across the major leagues and fast in-play markets.

Who it suits: new bettors who want the simplest app, and anyone who prefers a welcome offer that pays out whether or not the first bets win. sportsbook.fanduel.com

  3. Fanatics Sportsbook

Fanatics is the clear number three in New York, with about 12% of handle in August 2026. It operates in 23 states plus DC. In September 2026 it relaunched its app as Fanatics Sports & Casino, which puts the sportsbook, the casino and its Fanatics Markets prediction product in one place.

The hook is FanCash: every settled bet earns rewards you can spend on jerseys and merchandise from the Fanatics store. Fanatics also offers first-half injury protection on eligible player props. Check the welcome offer on the Fanatics site for your state before signing up.

Who it suits: fans who already buy team gear and want their betting to earn something tangible. sportsbook.fanatics.com

  4. BetMGM

BetMGM, the joint venture between MGM Resorts and Entain, lists about 25 US jurisdictions in its App Store description. It took 6.9% of New York handle in August 2026 and holds a 4.8 rating from 261,000 App Store ratings.

In Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia, the current offer is “Get up to $1,000 back in Bonus Bets over your first 10 days.” You get one No Sweat Token a day, each covering a bet of up to $100, after a minimum first deposit of $10. That offer excludes New Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico and West Virginia, which have their own versions. BetMGM is strong on props, futures and teasers, and links to MGM Rewards points.

Who it suits: bettors who visit MGM resorts and want their online play to earn hotel and dining rewards. sports.betmgm.com

  5. Caesars Sportsbook

Caesars, which bought William Hill’s US business in 2021, runs online betting in about 24 states plus DC and Puerto Rico, and it was one of the first brands live in Maine. Its app is rated 4.7 from 116,000 ratings, and it took 6.5% of New York handle in August 2026.

The current welcome offer is straightforward: “Place your first bet of $1 or more to receive 10 100% Profit Boosts, Up to $25 Max Bet per Boost.” The boosts are added automatically and last 14 days. Every bet earns Caesars Rewards credits, which convert into hotel stays and dining at Caesars properties.

Who it suits: Caesars Rewards members and bettors who prefer boosted odds to bonus bets. caesars.com/sportsbook-and-casino

  6. Hard Rock Bet

Hard Rock Bet shares the highest App Store rating among US sportsbooks with BetRivers: 4.9 stars, from 361,000 ratings. It is live in 10 states: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia. In Florida, under the Seminole Tribe’s compact, it is the only legal online sportsbook.

New users can “Bet $5 and Get Up to $500 in No Sweat Bets,” with no Promo Code required. Hard Rock Bet supports bank transfer, debit card, PayPal and Venmo, and its betting menu includes same game parlays, prop parlays and daily odds boosts. It is not licensed in New York.

Who it suits: Florida bettors, and anyone who values a highly rated app with PayPal and Venmo withdrawals.

  7. bet365

bet365 is the British giant’s US arm, licensed in 18 states plus DC, with Michigan added in April 2026 and DC in September 2026. Its app is rated 4.8 from 355,000 ratings. It is not licensed in New York.

bet365 is known for in-play betting on a huge range of sports, from NFL to international soccer, tennis and table tennis, and for live streaming in its app. Its App Store listing notes that the new customer offer excludes residents of Illinois, Tennessee and West Virginia. Check the current offer on bet365’s site for your state.

Who it suits: in-play bettors and anyone who bets on soccer and international sports. bet365.com

  8. theScore Bet

theScore Bet replaced ESPN Bet on December 1, 2025, when PENN Entertainment and ESPN ended their partnership early. It is live in 20 states plus DC and shares a 4.8-rated app (224,000 ratings) with PENN’s Hollywood Casino in states that allow online casinos.

The welcome offer on theScore Bet’s site reads “New Players Bet $10, Get $100 in Bonus Bets If You Win.” The app ties in closely with theScore’s sports news and scores app, which many bettors already use.

Who it suits: theScore app users who want scores, news and betting under one login. thescore.bet

Who it suits: bettors who like a single app for sports and casino, and smaller-market players in Delaware. betrivers.com

Its offer is “Bet $10 and get $50 in Bonus Bets”: make a first deposit, then place a cash bet of $10 or more at odds of -250 or longer. The bonus tokens can be used on same game parlays and expire after seven days.

Who it suits: casual bettors who want a small, low-risk welcome offer. ballybet.com

Retail-only and newly legal states

Mississippi allows mobile betting only on casino property. Washington, New Mexico, North Dakota and South Dakota have tribal or retail sportsbooks only. Wisconsin legalized tribal online betting in April 2026, but it is not yet live. California, Texas and Georgia still have no legal sports betting, despite repeated attempts.

How to sign up at an online sportsbook

  1. Check you are in a legal state. You need to be physically inside one of the states above, and 21 or over in most of them.
  2. Pick an app and download it. Use the official App Store or Google Play listing, or the operator’s own website.
  3. Register. Enter your legal name, address, date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number. Add a Promo Code here if the operator publishes one.
  4. Allow location services. The app confirms you are in a legal state before every bet.
  5. Deposit and place your first bet. Read the welcome offer terms first, as most need a minimum deposit and a qualifying bet within a set time.

Withdrawals and banking at betting apps

Every licensed sportsbook verifies your identity before your first withdrawal. You will be asked for your name, address, date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number, and sometimes a photo ID. Do it on day one, not on the day you want your winnings.

Withdrawals normally go back to the method you deposited with. E-wallets such as PayPal and Venmo, where offered, are usually the quickest once your account is verified. Online bank transfers take longer, and debit cards are not always available for withdrawals. Hard Rock Bet, for example, lists bank transfer, debit card, PayPal and Venmo. Check the cashier for the options in your state.

Odds, live betting and same game parlays

All the major apps now offer same game parlays, live in-play markets and player props on the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and college sports. The differences are in the details. bet365 is built around in-play betting and live streaming, Fanatics adds injury protection on some props, and Caesars and BetMGM lean on boosts and rewards.

Prices differ too. The same bet can pay noticeably more at one sportsbook than another, so holding two or three accounts and comparing before you bet is worth the effort. Our odds converter and parlay calculator help you compare like for like.

Sportsbook promo codes and welcome offers explained

Most US welcome offers take one of four forms. Bonus bets give you a fixed amount of free bets for a small first bet, as at FanDuel and theScore Bet. No Sweat or second-chance bets refund a losing first bet as a Bonus Bet, as at Hard Rock Bet, BetMGM and BetRivers. Profit boosts, Caesars’ choice, increase the winnings on a set number of bets. Some apps add casino spins on top.

Promo Codes are less common than they used to be, because most offers attach to the sign-up link. Where an operator publishes one, such as SPORTS at BetRivers or HORSEBET at Betinia, enter it on the registration form. Remember that Bonus Bets usually return only the winnings, not the stake. Our guide to sportsbook betting bonuses explains the terms, and the promos section lists current codes by state.

Betting apps or mobile sites?

Every major sportsbook offers both a downloadable app and a mobile or desktop website. The apps are faster and handle geolocation more smoothly. The website still needs a location plug-in on desktop, and you must be inside a legal state either way.

Sportsbooks vs prediction markets

DraftKings, FanDuel and Fanatics now also sell prediction markets, regulated federally by the CFTC as event contracts, in states such as California, Texas and Florida where they cannot run sportsbooks. These are not state-licensed sports betting. Several states, including Tennessee, are challenging them in court. Our prediction markets guide covers how they work and where they are legal.

Taxes on sports betting winnings

Sports betting winnings are taxable income under federal law, and most states tax them too. Sportsbooks issue a Form W-2G for larger wins. From the 2026 tax year, people who itemize can deduct gambling losses only up to 90% of those losses, against winnings. See IRS Topic 419 or a tax advisor for your situation.

Bet responsibly

Every licensed app offers deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, and many states run their own exclusion programs. Set limits before you start. If betting stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER or see our responsible gambling page.

21+ (18+ in some states). Must be physically located in a legal state. Gambling problem? Call 1-800-GAMBLER.

FAQ

What is the most popular sports betting app in the US?

DraftKings and FanDuel. In New York, the largest regulated market, they took 35.5% and 34.6% of all mobile betting handle in August 2026, according to the New York State Gaming Commission. Their App Store ratings are 4.8 from 1.4 million and 2.3 million ratings respectively.

How many states have legal online sports betting?

Online sports betting is live statewide in 31 states plus Washington, DC, as of November 2026. Puerto Rico also has it. Several other states, including Mississippi, Wisconsin and Washington, allow sports betting only in person or on casino premises.

Are sports betting apps legal in every state?

No. A licensed sportsbook can only take your bet when your phone shows you are inside a state that has legalized online sports betting and licensed that operator. Large states such as California and Texas have no legal online sportsbooks.

Can I bet on sports if I'm visiting a legal state?

Yes. Residency does not matter, location does. If you are physically inside a legal state, you can register and bet with any sportsbook licensed there, as long as you meet the minimum age.

What is the minimum age to bet on sports online?

21 in most states with online betting. A few, such as Kentucky, New Hampshire and Wyoming, allow it from 18. Check the app's terms for the state you are in.

Which sportsbook pays out the fastest?

Speed depends more on the payment method than the brand. E-wallets such as PayPal and Venmo, where offered, are usually quickest once your account is verified. Bank transfers take longer. Verify your identity before your first withdrawal to avoid delays.

Can I use more than one sportsbook at the same time?

Yes. You can hold accounts with every sportsbook licensed in your state and claim each one's welcome offer once. Comparing prices across two or three apps is the simplest way to get better odds on the same bet.

Do sports betting apps pay real money?

Licensed sportsbooks pay winnings in cash to your account, which you can withdraw to your bank or another approved method. Bonus Bets are different: you usually keep only the winnings, not the stake.

Do I need a promo code to get a sportsbook welcome offer?

Usually not. FanDuel, Caesars and Hard Rock Bet apply their offers automatically. Some operators publish a Promo Code, such as SPORTS at BetRivers, which you enter at registration.

Are prediction markets like Kalshi legal sports betting?

No. Prediction markets are regulated federally by the CFTC as event contracts, not licensed by states as sportsbooks. That is why they appear in states with no legal sportsbook, and why several states are fighting them in court.

Do I have to pay taxes on sports betting winnings?

Yes. Gambling winnings are taxable income in the US and must be reported. From the 2026 tax year, deductible gambling losses are capped at 90% of losses for people who itemize. See IRS Topic 419 or a tax advisor.

Why does a sportsbook need my location?

State law only allows licensed operators to take bets from people inside that state. Apps use geolocation to confirm where you are each time you bet. A VPN will get your bet blocked and can get your account closed.
